10:00 24th February 1940
Kapitan Ballert approaches a door in the office suite and look at the name plate on it.
The plate reads Flotilla Staff Officer Korvetten-kapitan Heinrich Von Hesse-Neuberger. This is the fixer of the Flotilla, the person who you need to see if you need parts for your boat or have a problem that you need help with but don’t want to bring it to the Admiral.
Kapitan Ballert takes a deep breath and knocks
He hears the command “Enter”.
Opening the door he walks into the room and salutes
“Heil Hitler Korvetten-kapitan Von Hesse-Neuberger” says Kapitan Ballert
“Ah, Welcome. If it isn’t the Knights Cross wearing hero Submarine Kapitan” Von Hesse-Neuberger sneers. “What could I possibly do for you?”
“Korvetten-kapitan you know I wouldn’t come to you unless there was a serious problem. Well the Flotilla has a serious problem” Joachim says
“The Flotilla or you?” interjects Heinrich.
“The Flotilla and in particular Kapitan Schmitzer” Joachim responds
“Well you might have guessed I haven’t forgiven you for taking Gertrude away from me and I wouldn’t be putting you top of my favours owed list but the Flotilla is a different matter. Tell me about it and if I believe you and if the problem is the Flotilla’s I might see what I can do” Heinrich offers
Kapitan Ballert the Flotilla Staff Officer the full story about Kapitan Schmitzer, Valda , Hauptsturmfuhrer Karl Schmidt and the SS man Manfred Goertner. He tells him that Schmitzer is in St. Willehad Hospital in town and has officers from his boat with him.
Von Hesse-Neuberger raises his hand and asks “Is that everything?
“Yes Korvetten-kapitan” Joachim replies.
“Then let me think for a moment” he says and closes his eyes
A couple of minutes later Von Hesse-Neuberger opens his eyes and indicates to Kapitan Ballert to sit down.
“Right listen to me carefully and if you do what I tell you then we might be able to get you out of this mess” Von Hesse-Neuberger says
“It isn’t my prob...” Kapitan Ballert starts to respond when Von Hesse-Neuberger shouts “Listen Carefully I said”
Lowering his voice he continues “You don’t know what sort of hornet’s nest you and your friend have walked into. Hauptsturmfuhrer Karl Schmidt is not a man to be crossed and the Gestapo are above the law. Fortunately I don’t want such a thing to blacken the name of our marvellous 15th Flotilla and I do know a little about Schmidt. One thing about being a desk jockey, as you politely call me, is I get to know things that are going on and people who are involved. I’m sure you haven’t found time to tell your lovely wife Annette about Helferin Klien and that’s just one thing I know about you. It pays to know things about people. I can get Schmidt to stop investigating officers of the 15th but it comes with some conditions”
“How can you do that?” Joachim asks
“You don’t need to know how just that I can” Von Hesse-Neuberger replies “and please don’t interrupt me again” he adds
“Firstly that floozy Valda has to be gotten off base immediately and yes I know she is in your quarters. Schmitzer and yourself must never see her again because I won’t be able to protect you a second time.
Secondly none of your crew or Schmitzer are to visit the Sentimentale Reise. In the mean time I will contact Schmidt and make sure the SS goons give us no more trouble. Do you understand these instructions?” Von Hesse-Neuberger asks
“Yes” Joachim tells him.
“Good. Then go and make sure that they are followed. Oh and Joachim this means that you and Schmitzer are in my debt and one thing you can be certain of is I always call in my debts sooner or later” Von Hesse-Neuberger says.
“Yes sir. It will be done by the end of the day” responds Kapitan Ballert and he salutes and leaves the office.
On the way back to his quarters Joachim asks himself what has he done? Made a pact with the desk jockey and already lied to him since Valda currently isn’t going anywhere until tomorrow at the earliest. Ah well let’s deal with one problem at a time and when Erhardt is safely on base he can deal with this.
