March and April 1941
Just started my next patrol into the Atlantic....Bay of Biscay roll 2 Aircraft attack.....successful crash dive! Transit #2 roll 3 Aircraft attack....successful crash dive! Atlantic #1 roll 2 Capital Ship! It's going to be a day of low number rolling me thinks!
Currently on last Hull point....next one we go down and we are currently being depth charged!
U-44 reported lost...flotsam seen in vicinity of last reported depth charge attack; highly likely that U-44 was sunk during the last round of depth charging.
Report inbound for March - April 1941 for U-44.
U-Boat Name and ID Number: Hohenlohe U-44 Patrol Date: March 1941. Patrol Assignment: Atlantic Successful Patrol: No Number of Freighters Sunk: 0 Number of Tankers Sunk: 0 Number of Capital Ships Sunk: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 0t (81,200t)
Ammunition expended: G7a Steam: 6 of which : 2 missed/ 2 detonated. 2 missed/ 0 detonated.
Total: 4 missed/ 2 detonated/ 0 duds.
Boat suffered two bouts of depth charge attack which it escaped but not before taking significant hull damage, forward tube door inoperable, deck gun inoperable, flak gun inoperable, dive planes inoperable? Repairs to electric engine #1 and Diesel engine #2 successful. U-44 decided to renegade severely damaged Capital Ship C.V. Ark Royal (4/5 damage). Fired aft torpedoes but both missed target. Picked up again by escort and suffered a third and fourth depth charge attack , the last of which registered 6 hits on U-44 which had failed to successfully employ evasive manoeuvres. Damage widespread. Hull integrity failed and boat imploded at depth killing entire crew all hands lost.
Crew: All lost at sea.
Request new boat and crew for next patrol. Prefer same class submarine. New Commander Hans Heinrich Lobau.
