U-Boat Name and ID Number: U-47 Delphin Patrol: # 3 Patrol Assignment: British Isles Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters Sank: 2 Number of Tankers Sank: 0 Number of Capital Ships Sank: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 14,500t (27,100t)
Ships Sank: 15.2.40 - SF83 "Condylis" 4400t 18.2.40 - LF40 "Napier Star" 10,100t
Refit Time: Standard, ready April 1940
Award Request: Crew Advancement
Notes:
4.2.40 02.00 - Sailed from Wilhelmshaven
15.2.40 22.00 - Attacked and damaged unescorted SF43 4,400t "Condylis" with the deck gun.
15.2.40 22.20 - Fired one G7a from close range to inflict massive damage on the freighter. She quickly sinks.
18.2.40 11.00 - contact made with an escorted freighter, identified as LF40 "Napier Star" 10,100t. She's a big one and we're not going to let her get away. We will carefully follow until sunset and then surface the boat, move into close range and attack.
18.2.40 21.00 - after successfully moving into range without alerting the escort to our presence, four G7a eels are launched. 3 hit and our target quickly begins to list to starboard.
Tommy must have been drinking on the job as we have easily slipped away, avoiding detection.
18.2.40 21.20 - From a safe distance, I observe "Napier Star" sink beneath the waves on her way to the bottom of the sea.
21.2.40 13.00 - Through the periscope, we have made visual contact with an escorted freighter identified as LF62 "King Malcom" , weighing in at 5100t. I have decided to play it safe and wait until darkness to attack.
21.2.40 15.00 - Today is "King Malcom"s lucky day. Unfortunately, we were unable to maintain contact so it looks like she's escaped for now.
22.2.40 16.00 - Setting a course for home
27.2.40 13.00 - Sailed into port with 2 victory pennants on display.

U-Boat Name and ID Number: das Vergelten U-37 Patrol: #2 Patrol Assignment: British Isles Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters Sank: 2 Number of Tankers Sank: 1 Number of Capital Ships Sank: Total Tonnage Destroyed: 18200 Refit Time: Standart 1 month 03.01.40 Obtained a mission to patrol the AM sector (British Isles) The boat is heading to the patrol area. 09.01.40 The exit to the patrol area passed without incident. 24. 01.40 1545 Smokes are seen on the horizon. We started the pursuit. After two weeks of fruitless searches, Providence sent us a booty. 1945 The vessel is identified as the "City of Birmigham". I decided not to waste torpedoes and attack the ship with artillery point-blank. After several shots, the vessel caught fire and received a strong list to the port side. The crew began to leave the ship. After making sure that the ship sank we continue to patrol 01.02.40 We continue to patrol the area AL 43-79. 02/07/40 1722 A small freighter accompanied by a corvette is discovered. The freighter was identified as “Annavore” 3000t. I decided to wait until nightfall and attack under cover of darkness. 2120 We reached the close range of the torpedo attack. From a submerged position, we fired a volley of aft torpedo tubes 5 and 6. The impact of the first torpedo caused a strong explosion and fire. The freighter got a strong bow trim. We managed to easily get away from the enemy escort. 10.02.40 1646. Tanker Athellaird 9000t was discovered accompanied by an escort. I'll wait for the night. 0015 While trying to reach close range, was detected by an escort. All attempts to evade the escort's attack failed. After a very accurate series of depth charges, the boat received multiple damages: 3.7 Flak, periscope, multiple leaks. Several sailors were killed. Subsequent attacks were evaded. I will try to attack the tanker again without getting too close. 0048 The periscope is completely out of order due to fatal damage. We are forced to surface and attack on the surface. Launched all four forward torpedo tubes. After being hit by two torpedoes, a severe fire began on the ship. After the dive, a violent explosion was heard. Escort attacks evaded. 14.02.40 1923. An enemy aircraft carrier is discovered. The flagship is identified as “Ark Royal”. Despite the enormous risk, I will try to attack the enemy. Miraculously, I managed to slip past the escort ships "at the distance of a pistol shot." I attack from the surface (inoperable periscope) and with forward and aft torpedo tubes. Hell of bad luck! Of the five torpedoes fired, three hit the target. And only one exploded. The aircraft carrier did not suffer visible damage. Incredibly I dodged the escort's attack. 15.02. 40. We run out of fuel and we have to turn home. Although the campaign was considered a success, the unsuccessful attack on the Ark Royal left the entire surviving crew feeling depressed. Ahead of us are a month of repairs and new sailors.
