Sep 2: Transit. No sightings Sep 5: Transit. No sightings Sep 8: Atlantic. No sightings Sep 11: Atlantic, No Sightings May 15: Atlantic. Convoy sighted: 3 small freighters, 1 tanker. The fates smiled on us with a night sighting of these targets. The tanker sank with our first salvo and we managed to avoid any serious damage from the escort. Evasion was successful carried out and flooding was pumped out. Sep 21: Atlantic. Convoy. 2 tankers, 2 small freighters. Too juicy a target to miss. 2 G7e fired at one tanker and 2 G7a at the other. Both G7e and one G7a hit their targets. One tanker sunk, the other minor damage. Dived to avoid detection and managed to escape detection by escorts. Sadly the escort remained with the damaged tanker so we decided to disengage. Sep 23: Transit. No sightings Sep 24: Transit: No sightings Sep 25: Returned to port. A very satifying month.

25 Sep 1941. U-51 Enters the harbor at La Rochelle, four pennants flying from the periscope.
Patrol Report U-Boat Name and ID Number: U-51, Ra’n Patrol: Sep 1941, Patrol Area: Atlantic Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters Sank(This Patrol/cumulative): 3/17 Number of Tankers Sank(This Patrol/cumulative): 1/3 Number of Capital Ships Sank(This Patrol/cumulative): 0/0 Total Tonnage Destroyed (This Patrol/cumulative): 22,300/131,800 Refit Time: 1 month + 1 month due to hull damage, Ready Dec 1941 Award Requests: WB for Dr
Request new Dr (rolled for crew experience – the new Dr is Experte)
Narrative: Left La Rochelle on 2 Sep for our 9th combat patrol. Uneventful passage, arriving at assigned patrol grid in the Atlantic on 8 Sep.
Things were quiet until the 12th, when the lookouts spotted multiple smoke columns on the horizon. Plotting an intercept course, we encountered a convoy. The nearest column consisted of a large freighter, a smaller freighter, and two tankers. As none of the targets were particularly big, I fired two torpedoes each at two of the ships. One of the two, a steam merchant of 5,000 tons blew up, leaving no trace behind. The other two eels were a miss and a dud.
We evaded the escort and proceeded to a new intercept. As it was now evening, I conducted a surface torpedo attack from medium range. This time three small freighters and a tanker presented themselves. I spread the torpedoes between the four targets, hoping for one or more kills on the smaller vessels and at least damaging the tanker. My plan bore fruit, a steam merchant of 3,600 tons sinking and the tanker (6,300 tons), while not sunk, was damaged.
We again eluded the escort and went in pursuit of the damaged tanker, which proved to have been left on its own. With no escort in sight, I took the tanker under fire from the 8.8cm, finishing her off.
On the 15th another convoy was sighted. I choose to hold off attacking, instead setting up for night attack. Shortly after dusk the convoy reappeared and I conducted a surface torpedo attack from medium range, firing the last of the bow eels two each at a tanker and a steam merchant of 7,400 tons. While both ships were hit, neither sank. This time the escort did find us, our new Sanitasmaat being seriously injured before finally evading the Tommy by exceeding test depth.
Back in pursuit of the injured freighter, we found her still under escort. I fired the stern torpedo, a 7e, from a submerged attack. The eel missed and we again had to exceed test depth to escape the escort. Catching her once more, still under escort, I fired our last torpedo. This proved to be the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s, or in this case freighter’s back. While the escort was frantically searching, we slipped away.
The last few days on station were uneventful, though our new doctor’s condition steadily worsened. With the damage to the hull, and Sanitasmmat Lemke’s condition, I decided not to request resupply. As it turned out, Sanitasmaat Lemke died on the way back to La Rochelle. Other than the loss of our new doctor, the crew were in high spirits as we entered the harbor on the 25th with four pennants flying. We will need a new doctor, as well as an extra month in refit to repair the hull, being ready for patrol again in December.
Respectfully submitted, Kptlt Viktor Radel, Kommandant U-51

Patrol Report: Second Patrol. U-Boat Name and ID Number: U-68 Alma Patrol: Aug- Sep 1941 Patrol Area: West African Coast Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters Sunk: 1(Cumulative 1) Number of Tankers Sunk: 0 (Cumulative 1) Number of Capital Ships Sunk: 0 (Cumulative 0) Total Tonnage Destroyed: 5,000t (Cumulative 16,000t) Refit Time: 1 month. Ready November 1941 Award Requests: None.
U-68 Alma reports back to the harbour and has one pennant aloft. It seems that it has been a light journey with little to cheer with only a single small freighter claimed off the coast near Freetown. A miserly 5,000t. Not even worth talking about. Very few eventful stories to report back upon other than a sighting of a search plane near by the site of the attack upon the freighter. Didn't even get to loose any torpedoes, the single kill achieved been the result of deck gun work. A very unglamourus patrol. Crew just shuffle into the nearest bars to at least toast their safe return this time and perhaps better luck next time.

U-559 “Weißes Pferd” Patrol: #8 Patrol Assignment: Atlantic Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters Sank: 1 Number of Tankers Sank: 2 Number of Capital Ships Sank: Total Tonnage Destroyed: 26800 (165800) Crew Elite Crew Names: Capitan: KKpt Siegmund Kliengenberg 1WO LtzS Bartolomeo Holzdorf (Experte) 2WO ObfzS Richard Welke (Eng)Lt (Ing) Simon Weber Doctor Sanitatsmaat Richard Werhner Refit Time:1 month 02.09.1941 We are leaving La Rochelle full of hope !. 08.09.41 Calmly passed the Bay of Biscay, and went to the Atlantic. 11.09.41 1730 Convoy Discovered! Before us are three tankers and a small merchant ship. I decided to take a chance and attacked from the surface position simultaneously from the bow and stern tubes. The first tanker was damaged by one torpedo; the second torpedo did not work. In the second tanker, the larger one, I fired 4 torpedoes and all 4 hit the target. After the fourth hit, the tanker broke in two and began to sink. By some miracle, I was unnoticed by the escort and was able to avoid enemy attacks. I will chase the wounded. 2045 It looks like the rest of the convoy decided to leave the straggler and flees in panic. Well, there is an opportunity to save torpedoes and give the gunners a chance to practice. I order you to surface and uncover the weapon. After several well-aimed shots, the crew began to leave the sinking ship. 14.09.41 1645 A single vessel sighted. There were no signs of the enemy, and I again decided to use the weapon. 1710. Well, I must admit, my artillerymen are masters of their craft. Several well-aimed shots - and the ship began to lose speed and got a roll to starboard. The crew leaves the ship. 21.09.41 2012 Birthday of 1 W.O. A convoy is spotted on the horizon. 2048 A trailing tanker attacked with 4 torpedoes. Three torpedoes hit the target and two of them did not work! Now is the time to hide! 2120. An escort passed by without noticing. Well, let's try to chase the wounded animal. 2150 This time the convoy did not abandon its brother. I fired the last three torpedoes from the nose tubes. All three hit their target, but two didn't explode! What the hell is going on with our torpedoes? 2202 We've been discovered! Bombs are falling one after another right above us! The diesel was damaged, numerous leaks and damage to the hull. 2309 Well, it could be worse. The escort lost us and left after the convoy. Upon surfacing, it was discovered that the anti-aircraft gun was damaged. 22.09.41 0945. Our magic mechanic fixed everything and we return to the base. 28.09.41 0735 At dawn we enter the harbor with three pentanes.
