Notes:
On the 10th, at 13.00 hrs, We sailed from La Spezia into the pristine waters of the Mediterranean. Our orders were to make way through the Western Mediterranean and beyond the Straight of Gibraltar - We would then spend a week surveying and reporting the weather conditions of the open Atlantic. We would then spend several weeks at sea searching for enemy shipping. Finally, we would sail to Bordeaux, and refit at our assigned port, BETASOM.
Things did not go as planned.
Less then 48 hours into the voyage, an RAF Swordfish caught us on the surface and damaged our hull. A crewman was seriously injured and the (odd) forward torpedo doors were rendered inoperative in the attack.
48 hours later, we were attacked again by an enemy aircraft - this time an Albacore.
The hull took more damage.
One crewman suffered a light wound.
Another crewman was severely wounded.
I received a severe wound and was then lightly wounded soon after!
Secondo took command and decided to return to La Spezia.
The two seriously injured crewmen both succumbed to their wounds before reaching Italy.
Damages will take 2 months to repair.
My wounds will take 3 months to heal.
Respectfully Submitted -
