The Christmas Short Tonnage Tournament will start on Monday 18th December 2017 and end on Saturday 30th December
This is a Top Tonnage Tournament and I want to make it challenging, covering the time from Dec-40 to Nov-42, so two years in game.
Here are the details:
1. Each player will start with a IXA (2 month patrols), with the first patrol starting in Dec-40. Starting rank will be "KptLt" with a trained crew. Play will continue until Nov-42 or until sunk, scuttled, captured or removed from the tournament by other events. First patrol will be SPANISH COAST. All further patrols will be based out of Wilhelmshaven and rolled on the table below, no re-basing allowed. Should your boat require a 5+ month refit you get another IXA. You keep the same crew and upgrades. If your captain is out 5+ months recovering from injury, at the end of recovery you get assigned a new IXA with a new trained crew (no upgrades/skills retained). No upgrading or switching to a different class of boat, everyone will use an IXA throughout.
D6 ROLL | PATROL | 1-2 | SPANISH COAST | 3-5 | NORTH AMERICA | 6 | CARIBBEAN |
2. The Tournament will run until Nov-42 (Last patrol can start in Nov-42, but none after) or till there´s no more Boats available to send on patrols. If you´re sunk, scuttled, or captured you´re out of the tournament.
3. The Tournament is a Top Tonnage tournament - the player with the highest number of sunk tonnage will be declared the winner, even if sunk, scuttled, or captured.
4. The game is to be played with standard rules.
The Tournament is played with the following rules from the Optional Rules section:
- Increased Historical Targeting [14.3] - Convoy Penetration [14.11]
5. Each player can only participate with 1 Boat. Use a festive name when registering your boat. e.g. U-Elf, U-Weihnachten ...etc. To register add an item to this list and copy the information block from the first item (My examples below) to the top part of your description. This part must be kept updated and is reference for the tournament director. Feel free to post your patrol logs, AAR´s below this basic information. AAR´s are not mandatory.
6. The tournament will start Monday 18th December, 2017.

Player name: grendel Captain: KptLt Oskar von Krampus Promotion: No Decoration: Iron Cross 2nd Class Boat: U-801 ‘Tinselhund’ Crew: Trained Patrols: 1 Patrol Area: North America Next Patrol: March 1941 Ships sunk: 6 Total tonnage sunk: 46,200 tons
Torps (Fired:21 Hit:12 Duds:2)
15 December, 1940, 0930 hours: Convoy sighted. Maneuvered into close range in search of large targets, spotting two tankers and a large freighter. Conducted a submerged torpedo attack with four G7a torpedoes. Three hits, one on each ship, but only one explosion. Tanker SS Norness (9,100 tons) hit by the bow, losing headway and taking on a slight list. We altered course and dived deep, escaping in the confusion.
Regained contact with Norness six hours later, returning to port without escort. We maneuvered in close and finished off the tanker with fire from the deck gun and one G7a torpedo.
21 December, 1940, 2030 hours: Large freighter SS Hertford (11,00 tons) and small freighter SS Zurichmoor (4,500 tons) sighted off Hampton Roads. Conducted a surface torpedo attack with one G7a torpedo on each target. We fail to calculate a good angle on Hertford, but the eel targeting the Zurichmoor hits amidships and explodes, sending the freighter to the bottom. We maneuver in close to Hertford and open fire with the deck gun, setting the freighter on fire. We finish off Hertford with two G7e torpedoes and leave the area before any sub hunters arrive.
5 January, 1941, 1900 hours: Tanker SS Pan Massachusets (8,200 tons) sighted off Long Island. Conducted a surface torpedo attack with three G7e torpedoes at close range. Two hits, two explosions. The tanker is hit twice aft, breaking her keel. We open the range and continue north as the crew takes to the lifeboats.
18 January, 1941, 2300 hours: Large freighters SS Venore (8,000 tons) and SS Friar Rock (5,400 tons) sighted, escorted by a pair of Canadian corvettes. Conducted a submerged torpedo attack with four G7a torpedoes at medium range. Three hits, three explosions. Venore is hit twice, once forward and once amidships, and explodes in a huge fireball. Friar Rock is hit forward, losing headway and settling in the water. The enemy response is confused, and we escape to the east before they can fix our location.
We circle back and regain contact with Friar Rock a couple of hours later. Conducted a submerged torpedo attack at long range with four G7a torpedoes. One hit amidships, which fortunately detonates, but the ship refuses to sink! The enemy escort responds quickly, and we only narrowly manage to escape.
Once again, we circle back and regain contact with the stricken freighter an hour later. Conducted a submerged torpedo attack at medium range with our last G7a torpedo. The eel runs true, hitting the freighter amidships and sending her to the bottom. Again, the enemy corvette responds quickly, but we dive deep and break contact before she can fix our position.
30 January, 1940: U-801 returns safely to port.

Player name: grendel Captain: KptLt Oskar von Krampus Promotion: No Decoration: Iron Cross 1st Class Boat: U-801 ‘Tinselhund’ Crew: Trained Patrols: 2 Patrol Area: North America Next Patrol: August 1941 Ships sunk: 2 Total tonnage sunk: 56,600 tons
Torps (Fired:3 Hit:3 Duds:0)
1 March, 1941, 1215 hours: Alarm! The topside watch detects an aircraft on the horizon as we transit the Bay of Biscay. I order a crash dive as the plane alters course towards us, and we manage to slip beneath the waves before we are attacked.
16 March, 1941, 1300 hours: Small freighter SS Norvana (2,300 tons) sighted off Nova Scotia. Maneuvered into close range and opened fire with the deck gun, then finished her off with a single G7a torpedo from the aft tubes.
8 April, 1941, 1100 hours: Tanker SS Gem (8,100 tons) sighted north of Long Island. Engaged with the deck gun at close range, then finished off the vessel with two G7a torpedoes.
30 April, 1941, 0915 hours: Alarm! An enemy aircraft dives on us out of the clouds on our return leg through the Bay of Biscay. There is no time to dive, so I order evasive action. A 125kg bomb scores a near miss, damaging our hull. But the enemy fighter, a British Mosquito, presses his attack a little too closely, and our 3.7cm gun scores a direct hit, blowing off its port wing and sending it into the sea.
30 April, 1941: U-801 returns safely to port.

9 August 1941, 1600 hours: Convoy sighted. We followed the ships until dark, then maneuvered into close range for a submerged torpedo attack. Fired two G7a torpedoes at large freighter SS Ville d’Leige (7,500 tons) and two G7a torpedoes at small freighter SS Counselor (5,000 tons). One hit on the large freighter, two hits on the small freighter. No duds. Counselor is hit twice amidships and breaks in two. Ville d’Leige is hit aft and slows, taking on a sharp list. Enemy escorts close in quickly and subject us to heavy depth charging, damaging our hull before we manage to break contact.
I leave the wounded freighter behind and continue to follow the convoy, but we lose contact after a squall line moves through the area later that night.
24 September, 1941, 0900 hours: Large freighter SS William Hooper (7,200 tons) sighted. No escort. Closed to medium range and holed the ship below the waterline with a salvo from the deck gun, then finished the freighter off with a pair of G7a torpedoes.
30 September, 1941: U-801 returns safely to port.

17 December 1941, 1800 hours: Large freighter SS City of New York (8,300 tons) sighted off Nova Scotia. Attempt to engage with deck gun, but score no hits due to heavy seas. Fired two G7a torpedoes at close range; two hits, but only one explosion. The freighter loses headway, settling by the bow.
Fearing the approach of enemy escorts, we engage the freighter with another round of shelling, and this time we are rewarded by a large explosion amidships that sends the ship beneath the waves.
28 December, 1941, 0930 hours: Alarm! An American Liberator appears overhead, catching us by surprise. A pair of bombs land close aboard, disabling the deck gun and dismounting the #2 diesel. Our medical officer is lightly wounded in the attack. I order a crash dive, and we manage to escape further attacks. Later, we surface to assess the damage. The deck gun is out of action, but LI Schmidt is able to remount the #2 engine.
30 January, 1942: U-801 returns safely to port.
