U-871 (Kastengelee) surrenders at the port of Lewes on 11th May 1945 with a black flag flying from the mast.
With all the supplies loaded and the bad news that was delivered on most days, I was glad to get out of Bergen as soon as possible. So, on the 5th March we got underway. With the Schnorchel employed for the majority of the journey, we traversed the Atlantic without incident and had no contact with the enemy on transit to our patrol area off the North American coastline.
We reached the patrol point during the afternoon of the 1st April 1945, but this was after being spotted by a Sunderland just after dawn. The crash dive was successful and as a result we continued onwards to begin the patrol.
A week had passed, and on the 8th April, a couple of hours after breakfast, a freighter, a tanker and their escorts were spotted, probably out of New York. I decided that it would be better to attack at night and this proved to be the wrong decision after the targets were lost during the late afternoon.
During the evening of the 20th April Chief Engineer Metz informed me that he had checked the torpedoes and that they appeared slightly different to the usual load. He predicted that they would be superior to previous loads.
Just over a week later, during lunch on the 28th April, when a single ship was sighted to port and was identified as a British Steam Merchant; the Livingston. It was at this point that I was cursing once again, because the deck guns had been removed during a refit. We got to close range and two steam eels were fired from the aft tubes. The coup de grace came a few minutes later in the form of both torpedoes hitting at the stern.
On the 8th May 1945, I received the message that all operational U-boats were ordered to surface and sail for the nearest Allied port. Once surfaced, I ensured that we were flying a black flag of surrender, but I headed south-west hoping to make it to South America. After a few days we were caught and escorted to the port at Lewes, Delaware, so we didn't get that far in the end.
We reached the port during the afternoon of the 11th May 1945 and for all of us the war was now over.
I heard that a couple of the lower ranked crew had been shot in a failed escape attempt, but the other officers and higher ranked members of my crew were detained for a short while, before being shipped home.
As for me, I was detained for a few months and questioned on a regular basis, before they finally stopped asking questions and shipped me home.
