U-Boat 41 Patrol Month(s): Oct 1939 Patrol Location: Spanish Coast Patrol # for this Kommandant: 1 Successful Patrol: Yes Number of freighters sunk: 2 / 2 Number of Tankers sunk: 0 / 0 Number of Capital Ships sunk: 0 / 0 Tonnage sunk: 10,500 / 10,500 Refit Time: 3 months Award Requests: Iron Cross 2nd Class for first successful patrol
Patrol Report Patrol was cut short, 5 days on station, due to extensive hull damage by enemy escort, as well as the death of boat’s doktor.
Seas and skies were clear during transit to patrol station.
Fifth day on station we spotted a small freighter, SS Broompark (5,000 tons), with escort. Fired three bow torpedoes from medium range, with one miss, and two hits, with on a dud. The freighter suffered enough damage to slow its course. The escort located us and made three passes before we evaded it. Doktor Gercke was killed on the first pass, which also knocked out the radio and damaged the hull. The second pass caused some flooding, and additional hull damage. 2WO Klausen was banged up a bit, but able to stay at his station. On its third and final pass, the escort cause more hull damage, as well as damaging our deck gun.
We were able to follow the damaged freighter, into the night, with the escort still guarding its charge. Fired two more torpedoes at medium range, with two hits, and two more duds. The escort was able to locate us for a single pass, which damaged our batteries.
Our shadowing of the damaged freighter continued through the night. We were able to fire two more torpedoes at medium range, with another miss and a hit. This hit put the nail in the freighter’s coffin, sending it to the bottom, finally. The escort was unable to locate us this time.
We were able to repair the batteries and the damaged deck gun. With extensive hull damage, I decided to bring us home. We held burial services for Doktor Gercke the next day.
Two days out from base we spotted a lone large freighter, SS River Alton (5,500 tons). We surfaced at close range and fired the deck gun. No shells hit. Fired two G7es, with a hit and a miss, damaging the freighter. As we tried to maneuver for a second attack an enemy aircraft was spotted. We successfully crashed dived, avoiding contact. We were able to maintain contact with the damaged freighter, and closed to point blank range, and fired two more torpedoes. Another miss, and a hit, sinking the ship.
The shipyard estimates three months for repair and refit. We expect to be able to return to sea in February.
Doktor Gercke has been replaced with Maat Claus Becker.
Respectfully, Kapitan Leutnant Wilhelm Schultze U-41, Kommandant

Patrol Report
September 3rd - Rainy weather, no contact September 9th - Clear weather condition. Contact spotted in 21:21, Sector AM 59. Warship. Submerge ordered, multiple hydrophone contacts. Warship identified as HMS Warwick, old WW1 W-class Destroyer, escort to small freighter, some steam merchant, name unknown (d48). Atlantikhai undetected shorten the distance to medium range. They never see that coming. Two torpedos fired, one at an escort, one at a freighter, in simultaneous hit timeframe. Two hits, less fortunate one for Warvick, as explosion torn him apart. We resurface to see the result of hit on merchant, but only what we could confirm, was no survivors. 4500 tonnage as confirmed estimate for freighter was signed to the book. WO1 Göbel expressed an official complaint regarding "display of recklessness when order to fire at the warship was given". Complaint noted. September 25th - No luck. Weather is awful, heavy rain, fog, zero visibility. No contact. Obtober 8th - Hydrophone sweep discovered close warship battlegroup. KptLt Borchers awakened. KptLt decided evade the contact due heavy escort and persistent bad weather. October 20th - U-39 arrived to the port.

While "The Hunted," "Silent Victory," and "Beneath the Med" have rules for attacking escorts, "The Hunters" does not, as it was not common practice by U-Boats during the period portrayed. In the other games, there are modifiers to hit an escort, as well as penalties if the shot misses.

U-Boat: # 37 Type: IXa Patrol: # 1 Patrol Assignment: British Isles Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters Sank: 3/ 18600 (West Notus 5500, Titan 9000, Olinda 4100) Number of Tankers Sank: 1/11000 (Anne Kjode 11000) Number of Capital Ships Sank: Total Tonnage Destroyed: 29600 Crew Capitan: KLt Siegmund von Margur 1WO LtzS Otto Schulz 2WO ObfzS Andreas Abracham (Eng)Lt (Ing) Hans Braun Doctor Sanitatsmaat Andreas Holzmann 03.09.39 1430 We received a message about the beginning of the war with Great Britain and France. Now it's up to us. Our task is to cut the trade routes of the British, and we are ready to fulfill it. 04.05.39 0845 Single freighter spotted. We approached and fired a warning shot. The team began transmitting the SOS signal. After several well-aimed shots into the wheelhouse, the transmission stopped. So we learned that we have West Notus, 5500 tons. The crew began to evacuate, and when the boats had moved a sufficient distance, I ordered the guns to open fire. Our gunners did not miss, and the ship began to sink rapidly. We quickly left the collision site. 10.09.39 1945 A week passed in a fruitless search, but suddenly, at sunset, we found a tanker escorted by a corvette. The tanker is of impressive size, about 10,000 tons, and I decide to attack from the surface, coming as close as possible. Fortunately, the crew of the corvette is too careless and I can release the piglets almost point-blank. First, second, third, fourth torpedo tubes, whoop! 1952 Hits from the first two torpedoes caused a major fire. The ship has lost speed and the crew is thrown overboard. Suddenly, a giant column of fire shoots up into the sky, and the blast wave brings the heat of burning oil to us. Now you need to get away from the escort attack. 2015 The corvette team is busy rescuing the surviving sailors from the tanker, and they don't care about us. We leave the battlefield undetected.
19.09.39 1900 And another week we tried to find the enemy. Suddenly, the watchmen reported that they had seen the smoke of a single ship, and we rushed in pursuit. 2048 This is a freighter, about 10,000 tons. And again, we fire a warning shot and give the crew the opportunity to leave the ship, and then open artillery fire. Our gunners hit without a miss, and the 9000-ton Titan goes to the bottom. 28.09.39 0945 Small freighter detected with escort ship. Since there is little fuel left, I will not wait for the night, but will approach the pistol shot and attack. 1025 I managed to get into attack range undetected. I give the order to launch all four torpedoes from the bow tubes. 1038 Two torpedoes missed - the freighter noticed torpedo tracks and deftly maneuvered, but the remaining two torpedoes hit the target. The ship got a trim on the bow and began to sink. 1045 This time the escort ship started hunting us. Depth charges are exploding right above us. 1103 From the compartments they report that there are no serious injuries, several people are slightly injured and a diesel engine has left the foundation. I order you to go to extreme depths.
1148 The escort has lost us, and the noise of the propellers has finally subsided. After surfacing, we tried to fix the diesel, but it was completely out of order. Now we will have to make an effort to return to the harbor. 06.10.39 We returned home without incident, and now we are waiting for a well-deserved rest!
