U-48 Patrol 7 for Kommandant KKpt Til Werthner Patrol Assignment: Atlantic Successful Patrol: No (Sunk) Freighters sunk: 1/9 Tankers sunk: 1/2 Capital Ships sunk: 0/0 Tonnage sunk: 15,600/84,000
Awards Requested: WBB for crew (all KIA)
U-48 sailed from Saint Nazaire on the 5th of January.
While traveling through the Bay of Biscay, she encountered an enemy aircraft, but was able to successfully crash dive and evade.
A few days after reaching the patrol area, a convoy was detected.
Under the cover of darkness, a surface attack was made resulting in the sinking of an 11,900 tanker, "Astral".
Following the attack, U-48 was detected by escorts and took a fair amount of damage before temporarily disengaging and making repairs.
KKpt Wertner decided to attack the convoy once more, this time remaining careful and keeping the boat submerged.
The attack was a success, sending one freighter to the bottom of the sea and damaging another.
This would be the last kill that Werthner would score.
The escorts were immediately on top of U - 48s position.
An incredible amount of damage was inflicted on the boat.
Virtually, every system was down - the deck gun, flak gun, periscope, radio, hydrophones, and dive planes.
She also had leaking fuel tanks and was taking on water. The flooding was so bad that Werthner was considering surfacing and surrendering. It took numerous rounds of depth charging, but ultimately, her battered hull gave in.
After hours of psychological terror, her crew finally came to rest in the dark abyss of the cold and unforgiving Atlantic Ocean.

U-50 enters the harbor at St. Nazaire, a lone pennant flying from the periscope.

Narrative:
1 Jan 1941, St. Nazaire Harbor After spending several months in St. Nazaire, enough of the crew of U-50 have established relationships that there is a crowd, albeit a small one, on the dock to see them off on their ninth combat patrol. Granted, the chilly winds of January may also be a factor influencing the size of the well wishers on the docks.
Watching them, his collar turned up against the aforementioned wind, KKpt Joachim Helmert wonders who among those bidding them fond farewell are secretly hoping they don’t return. And, more to the point, which of them will be going immediately to a hidden radio to report U-50’s departure. “Let them,” Joachim thinks, “No one is going to find us in this God-forsaken weather.”
Turning to his 1WO, ObLtzS Rudolh Mann, Joachim instructs him, “Take us out to sea.”
“Aye, Her Kaleun,” Rudolph replies, and then begins issuing orders. Joachim cannot help the slight grin that forms on his lips as he notices that his 1WO is clearly putting on a show for one of the young women on the pier. “I hope she doesn’t break your heart,” he silently chides his 1WO. “Or, more importantly, sell us to the Tommies.
24 Jan 1941, night, off the entrance to the Bristol Channel After almost a month of fruitless sailing along the coast of the British Isles, most of it in miserable fog, the Lookout excitedly whispers, “A ship!”
“Kommandant to the bridge,” 2WO ObFhnzS Wilhelm Stieg calls down the voice tube as he looks in the indicated direction. By the time KKpt Joachim Helmert is on the bridge, Wilhlem has acquired the target, a dark mass moving against the only slightly lighter darkness of the British mainland.
“A Lone ship, Herr Kaleun. Possibly sailing from Cardif or Swansea.”
“Makes little enough difference,” Joachim replies. “He’ll never reach his destination. Best man your gun, Willy. I have the con.”
As Joachim has the UZO brought up and set into place, Wilhelm makes his way to the 8cm deck gun and her by now eagerly waiting crew. It turns out the UZO is unnecessary, the 8cm making short work of the small freighter. While it isn’t much to show for enduring a month of misery. It is better than returning empty handed.
29 Jan 1941, St. Nazaire U-50 enters the harbor with one pennant flying from the periscope. The weather is more pleasant than four weeks ago, possibly explaining the larger crowd gathered to greet their return. If there is a spy among them, their efforts bore no fruit this time. While U-50 encountered only one ship, it was not a destroyer. And, there were no aircraft to harry them. Reflecting on the possible alternative, KKpt Joachim Helmert decides that perhaps the patrol was not so bad after all.

U-Boat: U-30 "Poseidon" Type VII-A Patrol Month(s): January 1941 Patrol Location: British Isles Patrol: 1 for KMDT ObLt Peter von Agstein
Successful Patrol: (Yes)
Number of freighters sunk: 1/1 Number of Tankers sunk: 1/1 Number of Capital Ships sunk: 0/0 Tonnage sunk: 9,800/9,800 Refit Time: 2 months (3 hull damage), ready April 1941 Award Requests: Iron Cross, 2nd Class (First succesful patrol)
Optional information for End of Patrol Report: Patrol narrative
The young commander von Agstein was facing, after a brief training, his first patrol in the already old type VIIA. The U-30, whose commander had been transferred to another u-boat, awaited his command in St. Nazaire harbor.
The first destination would be the British Isles, but as soon as they left the French harbor, the Luftwaffe marked the position of a small and lonely ship, the Trolla, which was sunk by 4 salvos from the deck gun. The omens could not be better.
Upon reaching the British Isles, a convoy is sighted at night, and from a long distance, 4 torpedoes was fired at two targets, with only one torpedo hitting a large freighter. The escort does not detect the submarine, so a second volley of torpedoes werw launched, with two hits, and one tanker, the Capulet, sunk. This time the escort chases the "Poseidon", damaging its hull and some systems. Assuming more than the test depth, the U-30 escaped from the escorts.
Back, they find an escorted tanker, which they launch the last three torpedoes at in a Night Surface Attack, but two of them miss, and the third only damages the tanker. The escort does not detect the U-30, but stays in the vicinity of the damaged ship. No more torpedoes on the tubes.
With the torpedoes exhausted, the commander decides to return to port, with no more encounters to report. It enters in St. Nazaire with two flags for the sinkings.
