U-66 Patrol 1 for Kommandant KptLt Vinzenz von Meyer Patrol Assignment: West African Coast Successful Patrol: Yes Freighters sunk: 3/3 Tankers sunk: 2/2 Capital Ships sunk: 0/0 Tonnage sunk: 48,900/48,900 Refit Time: 2 months (ready October 1941)
Awards Requested: EK2 for Kommandant
Wilhelmshaven U-Boat Base Wednesday, April 30th, 1941
The crew of U-66 are diligently loading provisions on board their boat.
On the dock, Maintenence Officer OltzS Anselm Freidich speaks with U-66 kommandant, KptLt Vincenze von Meyer.
"She's top of the line, Herr von Meyer. A fantastic boat indeed...76 meters long and a displacement of over 1,100 tons."
Freidich pauses for a moment and looks at U-66. His eyes move from bow to stern. He produces a smile similar to that of a child in a candy store.
Freidich continues, "She has a maximum speed of 18 knots and her range is over 13,000 nautical miles. Most importantly, she is armed to the teeth with two Anti-aircraft guns, a 10.5 cm deck gun and 22 eels."
Freidich turns to von Meyer and extends his arm for a handshake.
"Give them hell, Vincenze...."
MAY 1, 1941
U-66 sails from Wilhelmshaven to conduct her first war patrol.
Soon after leaving the oily, green water of the harbor, von Meyer opens the sealed envelope that contains his mission orders.
It reads,
"PATROL AREA IS WEST AFRICAN COAST/CAPE VERDE. INTERCEPT AND DESTROY ENEMY SHIPPING IN GRID EJ. GOOD HUNTING."
MAY 18, 1941
U-66 has successfully arrived at the patrol area without incident.
JUNE 1, 1941 MID-DAY
KptLt von Meyer briefly turns his sweat soaked captain's hat around backwards and presses his eyes against the periscope viewing lens....
"She's a juicy one....under escort....periscope down"
Von Meyer turns his hat forward.
"Keep your ears on her. We'll follow and attack after sunset..."
LATER THAT EVENING......
Von Meyer has successfully followed his target through the day. This has allowed him plenty of time to confirm the identity of his target, the 14,600 ton freighter, "Ulysses".
Now, under cover of darkness, he prepares for a submerged attack from medium range.....
While peering through the periscope, von Meyer shouts,
"Eins....Los! Zwei...Los! Drei...Los! Vier...Los!"
Several minutes pass as four g7a torpedos steam towards the unsuspecting freighter....
Then four loud explosions are heard as the eels hit their mark and detonate.
This creates a devastating effect and quickly sends "Ulysses" to the bottom of the sea.
The escort's attempt to locate U-66 is futile. Von Meyer remains undected and disengages.
"Reload tubes one through four with G7es! Next time will try our luck with electric eels...."
JUNE 22, 1941 01.00 hours
U-66 intercepts the unescorted, 10,500 ton tanker "W.B. Walker".
A close range, surface attack is made with four G7es from the forward tubes.
3 of the eels hit and detonate, but "W.B. Walker" somehow manages to remain afloat.
"Man the deck gun!", Von Meyer exclaims.
The gunnery crew quickly finishes off the heavily damaged tanker.
JUNE 23, 1941
U-66 rendezvous with a Type XIV U-Tanker. She receives fuel, ammo, provisions and 4 G7e torpedos.
Breaking radio silence, Von Meyer sends an encoded transmission to BdU,
"U-66 to BdU..... 2 fat targets sank thus far....Weather is almost unbearably hot but the hunting is good....resupply successful...will arrive in Saint Nazaire sometime in late July....over and out....."
JUNE 29, 1941 03.00 hours
U-66 intercepts another unescorted tanker.
8,100 ton "San Demetrio" is sunk after a successful attack is made with the deck gun.
JULY 5, 1941 15.00 hours
U-66 intercepts the 2,100 ton, unescorted freighter, "Bluefields".
This small, nimble freighter proves to be a difficult target for the gunnery crew.
Approximately 50 shells are fired and none can hit their target.
An impatient Von Meyer then fires a single G7a at the freighter. It hits, but fails to detonate.
"She's a quick little rabbit", Von Meyer says to his 1WO,
"and a lucky one, too... disengage... We could spend all day chasing her around the Atlantic.. her skipper has probably sent out a distress call...."
U-66 disengages and "Bluefields" sails away unscathed.
JULY 13, 1941 09.00 hours
Contact is made with a convoy sailing North. Von Meyer targets the most lucrative target, a 5700 ton freighter, "Steel Engineer", and a smaller, unidentified freighter estimated at 3000 tons.
"Prepare for a submerged attack. 3 G7es towards the largest freighter and one for the smaller one..." , Von Meyer instructs his crew.
One hit is scored on "Steel Engineer". She begins to fall behind the convoy.
An escort vessel quickly steams towards U-66's position and makes a counter attack.
Her inexperienced skipper is easily thrown off by Von Meyer's evasive maneuvers.
Soon, screws can be heard fading fast as the escort breaks off to return to the convoy.
Von Meyer waits for a while before coming to periscope depth. Upon raising the scope, he observes "Steel Engineer" on fire and adrift. She has been left behind by the convoy.
"Reload tubes 1 through 4 with G7as and prepare to surface!" , Von Meyer orders....
U-66 surfaces within close proximity to the damaged freighter.
"Get on the gun! Let's finish the job quickly!"
As the gunnery crew mans the deck gun, they discover the 3.7cm anti-aircraft cannon has been destroyed during the previous counter attack.
"Make Tommie pay for damaging our gun beyond repair!", Von Meyer shouts from the conning tower....
The gunnery crew expends the remainder of the boat's deck gun ammunition. More damage is inflicted upon their target in this attack, but they are unable to sink the stubborn freighter.
Von Meyer then fires 2 G7as from aft.
Both hit, creating massive explosions.
Finally, "Steel Engineer" begins to sink.
"Let's get on our way. Reload the aft tubes....", Von Meyer orders.
JULY 20, 1941 00.30 hours
A convoy is intercepted shortly after midnight.
Von Meyer makes a submerged attack and damages two freighters, one weighing in at 10,000 tons and the other at 4,700.
U-66 is detected by an escort vessel but evades damage from a brief counter attack.
Soon, the attack ends and the escort steams away towards the damaged freighter, identified as "Bretagne" (10,000t), to render aid.
Von Meyer now sets his sights on "Bretagne".
He fires four eels from medium range.....
Three hits seal the fate of "Bretagne". She breaks into three burning pieces of twisted steel.
"We got her boys!" ,Von Meyer shouts, the crew simultaneously let out a cheer of victory.
"Silence!", Von Meyer exclaims. The crew halt their celebration.
"Tommie is looking for some pay back now....periscope down....right rudder 30 degrees...forward 1/3rd......"
An escort detects U-66 but makes an unsuccessful attack.
Von Meyer's boat has proved to be quite maneuverable in spite of it's large size....
"Take her deeper chief, she can take it...." Von Meyer orders.....
U-66 descends deeper into the dark waters....
The crew remain silent as the hydrophone operator carefully listens....
"They're on top of us, Herr Kommandant! Splashes!"
Once more, Von Meyer orders evasive maneuvers.
He moves away from the majority of incoming depth charges but, U-66 takes some damage....
"We must go deeper! Take her down 30 meters further...."
The hull of U-66 is put to the test and holds against the immense pressure.....
"Contact fading....they've lost us....." , the hydrophone operator reports....
All on board breath a sigh of relief...
With a coy grin, Von Meyer calmly speaks to his 1WO,
"Well, that's that....we'll surface and repair any damage we may have taken...."
U-66 surfaces at sunrise. Damage reports indicate that the forward torpedo tubes have been damaged but can be repaired.
The LI has no problem getting a team together to jump overboard and make the repair. This swim call is welcome in the extremely warm weather, not far from the equator.....
JULY 30, 1941 07.00 hours
Only one day from Saint Nazaire, U-66 makes an emergency dive to avoid being spotted by an enemy patrol aircraft.
JULY 31, 1941 18.00 hours
U-66 tethers to the dock in the Sub Pens of Saint Nazaire.
Upon disembarking, Von Meyer is greeted by a familiar voice,
"Guten Tag, Herr von Meyer!"
It is the voice of OltzS Anselm Freidich.....
"What are you doing here, Anselm?" Von Meyer asks...
Freidich answers,
"I've been transferred to Saint Nazaire to maintain the Sub Pens. What a super structure it is here! These walls are impenetrable and security is tighter than that of a stalag!"

1 JUL 1941 Departed St Nazaire
3 JUL Crossed paths with U-108, as they were returning from patrol. We exchanged news and some supplies. They had a successful patrol, sinking 7 enemy merchantmen.
12 JUL 2130 Hours, sighted convoy with two large freighters, SS Surrey (8,600T), SS Ville de Liege (7,500T), and two small freighters, SS Pontypridd (4,500T), SS Hatasu (3,200T), with escort. Closed to medium range, submerged, and fired a G7a and a G7e at each of the large freighters. Two hits and two detonations against the SS Surrey, sinking her. One miss, and one hit against the SS Ville de Liege, damaging and slowing her. The escort failed to detect us.
13 JUL 0700 hours, returned to periscope depth to find the Ville de Liege had lagged behind, still with escort. Followed until after dusk.
2000 hours, closed to close range, undetected, and fired two G7as, two hits, one dud, stubbornly she did not sink. We remained undetected by escort.
2230 hours, returned to periscope depth to find the Ville de Liege was still escorted but making little headway. Maneuvered to close range, again, undetected, and fired two G7es, two hits, one dud, sunk. Eluded escort, again.
20 JUL 2350 hours, sighted convoy with one large freighter, SS Parnahyba (6,700T), and three small freighters, SS Firby (4,900T), SS Gro (4,000T), SS Mardinian (2,400T), with veteran escort. 22 JUL 0720 hours, sighted a convoy with a tanker, SS Congonian (5,000T), two large American freighters, SS Sagadahoc (6,300T), SS R. Semmes (6,000T) and a small freighter, SS Rio Azul (4,000T), with escort. Maneuvered to medium range, and fired one stern torpedo at the SS Congonian, a miss. Undetected by escort.
Plotted course to intercept convoy, based upon their latest heading.
1300 hours, at periscope depth found we were still in range of the convoy. Fired another aft torpedo at the SS Congonian, from medium range, a hit, a dud. This time found by the escort. We suffered damage to the stern torpedo door. Escort maintained its contact; no damage incurred. Escort continued to dog us, no additional damage. Unable to shake the escort, periscope damaged on this pass. Escort still on our heels, took some hull damage. Finally shook off the escort.
1730 hours, with one torpedo still on board, we took another crack at the convoy. Fired the last torpedo at the, very lucky, SS Congonian, a miss. Escort unable to locate us. We headed home.
Unable to repair the periscope or the aft torpedo door.
31 JUL Arrived St Nazaire Two months in repair and refit. Fourteen torpedoes fire: Three dud torpedoes. Four misses.

U-Boat: # 37 Type: IXa Patrol: # 6 Patrol Assignment: Atlantic Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters Sank: 5 (LF Eulola 6200, SF Auguila 3000, SF Elinico 3100, SF Alexander 4300, SF Montenoi 2600) Number of Tankers Sank: 0 Number of Capital Ships Sank:1 (CVE Avenger 12800) Total Tonnage Destroyed: 32000 (151500) Refit Time: 1 months Crew: Veteran Capitan: KLt Siegmund von Margur KC 1WO LtzS Otto Schulz 2WO ObfzS Andreas Abracham (Eng)Lt (Ing) Hans Braun Doctor Sanitatsmaat Andreas Holzmann 01.06.41 For three months we have been gaining strength and now we go hunting. Our target is enemy convoys crossing the Atlantic. 03.06.41 1406 An airplane was seen on the horizon, but we managed to dive in time. 06.06.41 0245 Enemy aircraft carrier with escort detected. I'm in position to attack. 0452 I don't risk getting too close, but I will attack from the surface to fire all 6 torpedoes. All 4 bow torpedo tubes - launch! Both feeders - start!0502 All six torpedoes hit, but one failed. The aircraft carrier is on fire and explosions are heard. 0520 Looks like the destroyers have rushed to look for us elsewhere. The acoustician recorded the crack of breaking bulkheads, it looks like the aircraft carrier is sinking. We are moving away from the place of attack at the lowest speed. 07.06.41 From the intercepted communications, we found out that we sank the CVE Avenger. 10.06.41 1245 We have detected a single enemy transport ship. We made several volleys, the ship stopped, and the fat crew loaded onto the boats. We shot the abandoned ship with guns and finished it off with a torpedo. 13.06.41 1032 And again, the watchmen noticed a single small vessel. It seems to be part of a disintegrated convoy or a desperate attempt by the captains to break through to England. I decided not to waste torpedoes, and ordered to open fire from the gun. 1120 Despite the damage, the ship is trying to elude us 14.06.41 0653 Na managed to overtake Augila and sink her. This time I did not spare the torpedo, in addition to the shells. 20.06.41 After a week of futile searches, we received a radiogram from aerial reconnaissance and we are proceeding to the interception square 22.06.41 0520 Small transport vessel detected. We have no shells left, and I launch two torpedoes. 0530 Both torpedoes hit the target and the ship quickly sank. 26.06.41 2215 Luck is on our side! Another single ship was spotted by us and two torpedoes are sent to the target. 2224 One torpedo has failed and we are chasing a wounded animal. 27.06.41 0206 Two more torpedoes rush towards the prey. 0215 This time everything turned out cleanly and the ship is slowly sinking. 05.07.41 0241 Another single ship detected. It seems that the entire merchant fleet of Britain decided to cross the Atlantic one at a time. Since we are running out of fuel, I launch 4 torpedoes at once, despite the fact that the target is insignificant. 0305 All four torpedoes hit the target and the small freighter literally flew into the air. Well, it's time to head back to base. The hunt was successful. 14.07.41 Without incident, we returned to the harbor with 6 victory pennants. With all responsibility I can say that my team has become elite.
