With the new stripes on my uniform to denote that I am now a Kapitan-Leutnant I set off on this patrol in high spirits. Our passage over the Bay of Biscay is uneventful but as we turn north towards the British Isles our lookouts spot a plane to the north. We immediately crash dive and run submerged for some hours but we are safe,
We start our patrol off the west coast of Scotland and 5 days pass when we find a lone ship. It is the Cherokee 5,900t. We fire the Deck gun and both salvos hit but cause minor damage. I order tubes 1 & 2 to fire and from this range we can’t miss. Both eels explode sending the Cherokee to the bottom of the sea.
2 days before the end of our Patrol I can’t believe the once in a life time opportunity that presents itself. Sailing with escorts is the Battleship Barham. It is 09:00 and we take up a firing position. Four steam torpedoes are loaded in the front tubes despite the fact they will leave a tell tale trail. From a reasonable distance all four eels are dispatched at the target. The Battleship changes course, perhaps they spotted the trails but 3 eels hit their target. The first fails to detonate but the other two cause minor damage and sonar reports a destroyer already heading straight too us. Now the game of cat and mouse begins.
The Destroy releases its Depth Charges and they explode close to us. Markus Rabbe, our engineer is injured and we lose our hydrophones. I order us deep and we wait for the second pass. This time they are close again and we notice buckling of the hull inside our boat.
We can’t stay at this depth so we come up to 30 metres as the destroyer makes a third pass. More damage is sustained and our dive planes aren’t responding properly.. We are sitting ducks as the fourth pass is made by the enemy. One of the crew is injured and there is flooding that we struggle to control.
The destroy turns again for another pass which is again very close to us. More flooding which we struggle to contain and one of the diesel engines gets flooded with sea water. Markus Rabbe suffers a severe laceration to his right arm and is unable to continue in his duties. Ralf Kamtner the doctor also suffers a minor injury.
Are end must be near and I clutch my lucky coin and pray to whatever gods will listen to get us out of this predicament. Without warning the destroyer slows down and comes to a full stop. We have no idea why, maybe it had engine trouble, who knows. I thank the gods and take the opportunity to slide away silently from the battle zone.
When we can surface we take stock and try and repair systems but with Markus not available we aren’t successful and I can see considerable damage to the hull of the boat.
With only one diesel engine working and the other damage we have sustained I order us to head for home.
It is slow going on half power but make it to a day away from safe harbour when an aircraft comes at us out of the sun. Bombs drop around us and with the lack of warning our flak attack on the plane is not effective. The shrapnel and explosions damage our Flak gun and our hull whilst one of the flak gunners also suffers a minor wound. We dive before the plane can take a second run at us and wait to see if any other attacks are forthcoming.
After several hours we resume our limp towards our port where we arrive with 1 pennant flying and disappointment at having missed our chance to sink a Battleship but at least we survived. It will be sometime before we can put to sea again but at least the crew will get Christmas at home and Markus will be recovered from his injuries before we sail again.

1 OCT 1941 Departed St Nazaire
1 OCT through 6 OCT Through the Bay of Biscay and into the Atlantic no enemy was encountered
7 OCT 0950 Hours Sighted lone freighter SS Silverbelle (5,300T). Surfaced at close range and attacked with the deck gun, damaging, and slowing the ship. Fired two G7as, one miss, one dud. We maintained contact and fired two G7es, both missed. Still maintaining contact, fired our deck gun again, damaging her further but still did not sink her. Fired two more G7es, both detonated, with a secondary explosion of the ship’s boiler exploding, sinking the merchantman.
12 OCT 1920 Hours Sighted a convoy with two freighters, SS Graigwen (3,700T) SS Tuva (4,700T), and two tankers, SS Erodona (6,200T) SS Cedarbank (5,200T), with escort. Surfaced at close range, undetected, and fired a G7a and a G7e against each tanker. There was one miss and a dud against the Erodona. Both torpedoes detonated against the Cedarbank, sinking her. Turned and fired a stern G7e against the Erodona, damaging her). The escort located us, but his attacks were wide and deep. As a result, we avoided further discovery and attacks. We continued pursuit of the damaged tanker, which lost its escort, into the next morning.
13 OCT 0910 Hours Surfaced at close range to attack the stricken tanker with our deck gun, but unable to cause any discernable damage. Fired our remaining stern torpedo, striking and further damaging, but not sinking the tanker. We continued our pursuit and fired our last two torpedoes, two hits, two detonations, finally sinking her.
Out of torpedoes and shells, we headed for home.
17 OCT 1905 Hours Attacked by enemy aircraft, coming out of the darkening eastern sky. Unspotted, we were unable to dive to avoid its attack. Several crew suffered serious wounds from the shrapnel of the enemy aircraft’s bombs. The attack also damaged the forward torpedo door. We were unable to hit or damage the enemy aircraft. With return fire from our A guns.
18 OCT through 27 OCT No enemy encountered
27 OCT Arrived St Nazaire
Zweiter Wachoffizier, Leutnent zur See, Fredrik Grossmann, through his outstanding performance, has been rated an Experte.
We expect to be ready for our next patrol in late November or early December.

04.10.41 Again the autumn stormy sea opened its arms to us. Our target is British convoys in the Atlantic and we hope for good booty! 11.10.41 We received a message from U-66. She has spotted the convoy, and we are moving to intercept it with all possible speed. 14.10.41 1125 Numerous smokes detected - convoy! We will maneuver and wait for darkness. 1925 At last the sun has disappeared behind the horizon and we are ready to attack. I fire two torpedoes at the lead ship and two at the next. 1935 All torpedoes hit the target, the lead ship slowed down, trimmed aft and began to circle. A large fire has started on the second ship, and the crew leaves it. Now it's our time to hide, and I'm ordering an emergency dive. 1954 Enemy destroyers discovered us and a game of cat and mouse began. We received minor damage. I order you to dive even deeper. 2050 The enemy escort lost us and we surfaced to periscope depth to find our wounded prey, trying to keep up with the rest of the convoy. 2215 It seems that the damaged ship was considered sinking and abandoned to its fate. We fire a warning shot and give the crew a chance to leave the ship. They prudently do not attempt to transmit the SOS signal. When there is no one left on the ship, we shoot it from a gun. Depth charge explosions damaged 2 cm of the anti-aircraft gun, but we were able to quickly repair it. 08.11.41 For almost a month we unsuccessfully plowed the stormy Atlantic. No sign of the enemy. But today we received a long-awaited message from U-98 about contact with the convoy. The boat, like an arrow, rushed to the point of interception. 11.11.41 1824 We have very little fuel left, and this attack will be the last of this patrol. Therefore, realizing the danger, I decide to attack in the surface position in order to hit with both forward and aft tubes. Having chosen the largest ship, I launch four forward torpedoes into it. All of them hit the target, and the ship literally takes off into the air. But of the two aft torpedoes, one does not work and the enemy ship, having received a trim to starboard, remains afloat. Now the main thing is to have time to dive before we are discovered. 1908 By some miracle, the enemy escort chose the wrong direction, and yet they rushed to look for us in a completely different direction. We continue to pursue the damaged enemy ship. 2338 We have reached the attack line and four eels are rushing towards the target! 2350 Of the four torpedoes, three missed! It's kind of a shame! Fortunately, the fourth torpedo hit the target and the ship begins to sink. We dive to extreme depths, trying to hide from the destroyers approaching us. 0048. And again Neptune sheltered us! The destroyers passed over us and dropped depth charges far away from us. 12.11.41 0223 We surfaced and reloaded the torpedo tubes. We only have fuel left for the return trip and we have no choice but to return. 21.11.41 We enter our native harbor with four victorious pennants. Requested Oakleaves for Knight's Cross
