Depart Wilhelmshaven – 3 June 1943
3 June :Departed from Wilhelmshaven 3-8 June :Transited to operational area without incident. 8-12 June :10/6 9:15am spotted convoy of ships heading West at grid AL3437. KptLt. Kahn Ordered battle stations and the crew made ready to attack the closest ships to their potion. To the U-512's port Kahn could make out the silhouettes of four ships. These ships composed two small freighters of about 4,000 to 5,000 tons. A larger freighter of around 7,000 to 8,000 tons and a Tanker running about 8,000 tons. As it was early in the day, KptLt. Kahn decided to make a dat light attack so not to loose contact with the convoy. He ordered to fire the forward tubes with a spread of one G7e torpedo at the trailing small freighter, one G7e at the large freighter and two G7e's at the tanker. At at long range all four fish missed their intended targets. With the escort disorderly attempt to find them, KptLt Khan worked to maneuver his U-Boat to follow the convoy. But the rough seas caused him to loose contact with the convoy. 13-28 June: 22/6 11:30am KptLt. Khan radio he has made contact with a convoy. Setting up for a daylight attack he orders his crew to make a long range submerged attack on the largest freighter and the tanker. Picking a Freighter of around 9,000 tons and a Tanker of around 9,500 tons Kahn assigns one G7e torpedo on the freighter and three G7e's to the tanker. All fish are fired at the same time with the three going to the tanker set about 45 meter spread. There in only one detonation on the freighter. The escort immediately swing towards the U-512. For an hour the U-512 is hounded, taking on multiple hits to the Hull (Hull x2) with enough force to kill some of the crew. But KptLt Kahn and crew are are able to finally elude the Destroyers and Corvette's. So not to let his hard work to damage the freighter, Khan attempts to follow the stricken ship. At around 3:11pm contact is made with the limping freighter. There are two Corvette's staying back to protect the merchant marines and their cargo. KptLt. Kahn orders another attack. Firing the remaining two G7e's from the aft tubes hoping to finish off the ship. After a wait that seams like eternity, there is no detonations. Though the Escort suspects something is awry and make a search of the area. KptLt. Kahn and his crew easily elude them and reestablish contact with the freighter. At 7:15pm the U-512 gets in position to fire four G7a's on the starboard side of the freighter. At least one torpedo hits home with a spectacular explosion. Within fifteen minutes the freighter is under water. But this time the escort has a better bead on the U-512 as they follow the bubble trail. For what seemed an eternity the two corvettes hammered the U-Boat. After two to three hours these war ships inflicted substantial Hull damage (6x Hull [for total of 8]) and Flooding . Seriously wounding LI Dirk Delbrück and Dok Jörg Pfeffer. The attacks also damaged Electric Motor #2 (Fixed), Hydrophone (inop), 3.7mm Flak (inop), Flak Guns (inop), Radio (Fixed.) After stemming the flooding we repaired what was fixable and securing those systems that weren't. Limping back to Wilhelmshaven took us longer than getting to station. But we made it back to port on the 28th of June. Port Hardy (British Steam merchant):Historical Information on convoy ( virtually) attacked; HX.244 Convoy: Departed from NYC on 15 June 1943. Arrived Liverpool on 30 June 1943. Number of ships in convoy: 89 Merchants Number of Escort Ships: 24
